Substance names, codes and characteristics explained
PES - Polyester
PES is the official abbreviation for polyester fiber (from polyethylene terephthalate ). In the furniture industry, "PES" and "polyester" are often used interchangeably.
Features:
- Strong, wear-resistant, dimensionally stable.
- Easy to clean.
- May feel warm (less breathable than natural fibers).
Olefin (also called Polypropylene or PP)
Synthetic fiber made of polypropylene. Known for its stain resistance and colorfastness (it doesn't fade easily in sunlight). Often used for outdoor fabrics or pet-resistant fabrics.
Features:
- Water-repellent.
- Quick-drying.
- Resistant to mold and sunlight
- Less soft than polyester, but extremely durable.
NY - NYLON
Abbreviation for nylon (polyamide fiber).
Often blended with polyester to make the fabric stronger and more elastic.
Features:
- High wear resistance.
- Smooth and supple.
- Can look shinier than pure polyester.
RA - Rayon (Viscose)
A semi-natural fiber made from wood pulp. Sometimes also called "VI" (from "viscose").
Features:
- Softer and more natural feel than polyester.
- Gives shine and suppleness.
- Less strong than synthetic fibres, especially when wet.
CO – Cotton (Cotton)
Natural fiber. Sometimes added in small amounts to make fabrics feel softer or more natural.
Features:
- Breathable, soft, natural.
- May absorb stains faster.
- Shrinks or wrinkles more easily than synthetic fabrics.
Martindale test (rubs)
The Martindale test measures a fabric's wear resistance. These values are listed on the Davis Fabrics website.
In the test, a piece of fabric is repeatedly rubbed under pressure against a standard abrasive cloth. Each rub is called a cycle or "rub."
- The machine will not stop until the first wear or breakage of the fiber occurs.
- The number of cycles up to that point is the Martindale value.
The value is expressed in “Martindale rubs” (e.g. 35,000 Martindale ).
